Aetna Therapists in NYC — Dr. Kull & Associates
Aetna psychotherapy in Manhattan and online across New York. Free 15-minute consultation to verify your benefits and confirm your per-session cost before your first appointment.
Insurance and therapy in New York — the reality
Most independent psychotherapists in New York don't accept insurance. A session runs $200 to $350 out of pocket, and Aetna members often defer therapy or pay full-fee and wait for partial reimbursement that arrives months later, if at all.
We took a different path. Dr. Kull & Associates accepts Aetna, and for most commercial Aetna plans, sessions are billed to your coverage — you pay what your plan says you pay, at the visit. Cost varies by plan, and we verify the specifics for you before your first session so there are no surprises.
Does Dr. Kull & Associates take Aetna?
Yes. Dr. Kull & Associates accepts Aetna insurance. We verify your specific benefits during your free consultation and confirm your per-session cost before your first appointment.
If you have Aetna, we want to be a real option for you. Every Aetna plan is a little different — the free consultation is where we confirm the specifics for your situation and answer any questions before you decide to start.
What Aetna plans does the practice accept?
Our clinicians accept most commercial Aetna plans, including PPO, POS, HMO with mental health coverage, and most employer-sponsored plans. Aetna Medicare, Aetna Medicaid, and Aetna Better Health aren't included.
Commercial plans — the ones offered through employers or purchased individually — are the plans most Aetna members have. If you're not sure whether your plan qualifies, we're happy to check when you contact us; it takes a few minutes.
How much does therapy cost with Aetna at Dr. Kull & Associates?
Cost depends on your specific plan. Aetna commercial plans typically limit outpatient mental health to a copay — commonly between $20 and $50 per session. We verify your benefits before your first session so there are no surprises.
Aetna uses three main structures for mental health cost, and yours will match one of these:
- Copay plans — a flat dollar amount per session. Doesn't require your deductible to be met first. Most common.
- Coinsurance plans — you pay a percentage of the contracted rate after your deductible is met.
- Deductible-first plans — often high-deductible health plans (HDHPs), which have you paying our contracted rate per session until you meet the deductible, then transitioning to copay or coinsurance.
Whichever category yours falls into, we check it and tell you exactly what to expect before you start.
Do I need a referral to see an Aetna therapist?
Most Aetna commercial plans (PPO, POS, most HMOs) do not require a referral for outpatient mental health. A small number of HMO-style plans require your primary care doctor to submit one.
If your plan does require a referral, we'll flag it during benefits verification and walk you through the process — typically a five-minute call from your PCP's office to Aetna.
Does Aetna cover online therapy or telehealth?
Yes. Aetna covers telehealth psychotherapy at the same reimbursement rate as in-person sessions across all commercial plans, and this coverage is permanent — not a pandemic-era temporary provision.
Sessions with Dr. Kull & Associates happen either in our Columbus Circle office (330 West 58th Street, Suite 401) or via secure video across New York State. Your Aetna coverage applies identically either way.
Does my Aetna deductible apply to therapy sessions?
It depends on your plan. Many Aetna commercial plans have separate cost structures for behavioral health that don't require deductible payment before copays apply. Some plans do.
If your plan is deductible-first, you'd pay our contracted rate per session — typically well below our full self-pay fee — until you meet your deductible, then transition to your copay or coinsurance. We check this during benefits verification so you know what to expect.
Are couples therapy or family therapy covered by Aetna?
Aetna typically covers couples and family therapy when one member has a mental health diagnosis that the therapy addresses. Coverage varies more than for individual therapy, and some plans exclude relational therapy entirely.
If you're interested in couples work, mention it when you contact us and we'll verify what your specific plan will pay for.
What Aetna plans does the practice not accept?
We can't accept Aetna Medicare Advantage, Aetna Medicaid managed care, or Aetna Better Health. If you have one of these plans, we're happy to talk through options — reach out and we'll see what we can figure out.
Some employer self-funded plans also carve out mental health to a separate behavioral health vendor we don't contract with. If you're not sure which category your plan falls into, ask us. It takes a few minutes to check.
How do I verify my Aetna benefits before starting therapy?
Call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card, ask if outpatient mental health is covered and what your copay per session will be, and share what you learn with us when you email to schedule.
Or if calling Aetna feels like more than you want to deal with — we can run the verification for you. Email us your name, date of birth, and Aetna member ID, and we'll come back with what your plan covers and what you can expect to pay per session.
How do I schedule an intake?
Email hello@drkull.com or visit our contact page to schedule a free 15-minute consultation. We'll confirm your Aetna benefits and match you with a therapist before your first full session.
The consultation is a chance to briefly discuss what brings you to therapy, get a feel for whether we're the right match, and answer any questions about how insurance and scheduling work in practice. No cost, no insurance required for the consultation itself.
